Belle (2013) is a British historical drama directed by Amma Asante, inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, a mixed-race woman raised as a free woman in the aristocratic household of her great-uncle, the Earl of Mansfield, in 18th-century England. Born to a British naval officer and an enslaved African woman, Dido is brought to Kenwood House as a young girl and raised alongside her white cousin Elizabeth, but her unique status leaves her in a liminal position, too noble to dine with servants yet too dark-skinned to fully participate in society. Gugu Mbatha-Raw delivers a breakout performance as Dido, capturing the internal conflict of a woman navigating privilege and prejudice in equal measure, while Sarah Gadon plays her cousin Elizabeth. Tom Wilkinson stars as Lord Mansfield, the Lord Chief Justice whose landmark rulings on slavery cases would help pave the way for abolition, with Emily Watson as his wife and Miranda Richardson as a scheming aristocrat seeking a match for her son. Tom Felton co-stars as a dangerous suitor, while Sam Reid plays John Davinier, an idealistic clergyman’s son whose relationship with Dido challenges her family’s expectations. The film intertwines Dido’s personal journey with the broader legal and political battles over the slave trade, as Lord Mansfield presides over the Zong massacre insurance case, in which a ship’s crew threw enslaved people overboard to claim insurance money. Written by Misan Sagay, the screenplay explores race, class, gender, and the contradictions of a society built on enlightenment ideals while profiting from human bondage. The film was praised for its lush period detail, Mbatha-Raw’s performance, and its exploration of a forgotten figure whose portrait alongside her cousin at Scone Palace inspired the production.
